Shirley Ann Jackson

True First Series / Shirley Ann Jackson

Shirley Ann Jackson

Shirley Ann Jackson

Shirley Ann Jackson was the first African-American woman to be awarded the National Medal of Science, an achievement that is but one in a long list of ground-breaking firsts. She was the first woman of African descent to earn a doctorate from MIT, the first woman to serve as Chair of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the first African-American to be appointed President of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Behind these honours is the story of a brilliant scientist, academic, visionary, and determined leader who continues to motivate young women and those of African descent to join the ranks of science.
