SEASON FIVE: A Global Perspective
Much of True First has chronicled the achievements of African Americans, and season 5 brings a global perspective to the historic firsts attained by those of African descent.
After serving twenty-seven years in prison for his activism to end apartheid in South Africa, Nelson Mandela went on to become one of the most revered and beloved world leaders, a tireless advocate for peace and social justice. Kwame Nkrumah became Ghana’s first Prime Minister in 1957, shortly after the country declared its independence from British rule. Wangari Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her environmental and social activism, while Nigerian Wole Soyinka was the first person of African descent to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. The stories of Mayor John Archer, Governor General Michaëlle Jean, actor and ambassador Sidney Poitier and musician Winifred Atwell round out the season.
